Personal Alarm Systems

If you have an elderly parent or loved one who lives alone and you worry about their well being you are not alone. As much as a senior citizen may still cherish their autonomy albeit stubbornly, we as their children have to deal with the gnawing thought about what may happen if an emergency arose and we weren’t around in time to help.

What happens if they slip in the bathtub and become immobile, or if they have a stroke or heart attack , who is going to be there to help them in time ?

This is where personal alarms systems come in. With the every increasing age in population, more and more emphasis has been put in regards to the needs of the elderly  thus resulting in an increase in security products and devices to accommodate them. Making sure  your loved one possess a personal alarm system  is a great way to ease the worry and stress of possible unfortunate events and medical emergencies.

A typical personal alarm system is either worn around the neck or around the wrist that can be activated with the simple push of a help button. If an emergency does occur, once the button is pressed the system will automatically contact an emergency help center. The emergency response center will then call the person in question immediately
to determine the situation. The personal alarm system is usually integrated with a response center, so all of the person’s personal information will be on file. This way it can help assess a particular situation in a more timely and effective manner. If there is no answer, an ambulance will then immediately be dispatched to the person’s home.

The way the personal alarm system works is similar to a a telephone using two way communication. Some other features of the personal alarm is that they contain battery back up systems that can last for 15 hour intervals, they weigh no more than an ounce or two and are water proof with battery life for up to 5 years at a time. They can also
be worn like a piece of jewelry for a more aesthetic appearance.

There are quite a few different types of personal alarms systems on the market. Some come integrated with a GPS homing device , ensuring that the emergency unit can locate the person regardless of where they are located. There telephone alarm systems as well and there are more simple units that posses a simple panic button.

The basic concept of operation is that the personal alarm system is connected to the main telephone line much like an answering machine. Once the help button is pressed, a signal is sent to the response unit or any other location of choice. Some systems can even dial up to 5 different numbers consecutively.

Either way, with the knowledge that such a device exists can well create peace of mind to those who have elderly family members that they want to take care of. Obtaining a personal alarm system for your elderly family member may well save a life.
