When it comes to home security, there is a sad but harsh reality, in that in some cases a hired baby sitter or nanny has been known to abuse a child in their care. This is a parents worst nightmare, leaving their child with someone who abuses them instead of providing their child with proper care . There have been cases where the abuse of a child has gone on for months by a hired sitter or nanny before the truth was revealed. This is obviously traumatic for any caring and responsible parent who are doing their best to provide the best security for their children when they are away.

Due to this, more parents are considering installing hidden cameras or spying devices in their homes to survey the activities of  baby sitters or hired nannies to ensure that their children are not abused. This also leaves for a much greater peace of mind when a parent is away at work or out in the evenings. Over the past five years statistics show a 25% increase in the sales of spy cameras also known as ‘Nanny Cams’

With the increased use of “spy cameras” there has been growing debate as to whether the use of nanny cams are ethical or considered an invasion of privacy.

While we hear of cases of child abuse from sitters in the media, for the most part, statistics show that most child care

providors do not mind the fact that they are being surveyed as long as they are aware that such a device, or devices are in use in the home.

It seems the real debate comes into play when the sitter or nanny was not aware that they were being “spied” on and complained that their privacy rights have been violated.

However it is not illegal to install these home security devices and “survey” the premises while a child care provider is unaware of being watched. However it is always best to inform the sitter or child care provider that a security system is in place. This will avoid creating a situation of distrust between the sitter and parent if the sitter discovers that they have been spied on.

Those considering purchasing a “nanny cam” have a variety of choices to choose from in the market today. Spy cameras come in many shapes or forms and vary widely in prices and quality.

The majority are wireless systems that can be hidden in plants or stuffed animals, some even come in the form of standard clock radios, hair dryers and even air fresheners that can be inconspicuously placed around the house. The prices can range from 100.00 to 500.00 depending on the sophistication and quality. Lower end models can send signals via remote computer access that can be recorded and stored on a hard drive for later viewing. Others are high end digitals systems which will send live video feeds via an internet connection or cell phones for live monitoring.

Many security and spy cameras can be purchased at electronics stores in your area.

Regardless of your budget and needs, owning a spy surveilance camera in your home to watch your children is always a plus when it comes to your peace of mind.
