Home Alarms and Security Systems Guide

Home Security System Costs

When we talk about home security system costs , there basically 2 kinds of home security systems that we need to look at. First there is the do it yourself system packages and the higher end systems that are professionaly installed by alarm service providers. Many do it yourself systems are wireless systems and are much easier to install.

It would be a good idea to find out as much as you can about what the differences are between the 2 types of systems and their benefits and short commings.

Do it yourself systems are easy to find in your local hardware store and can be bought right off the shelf and of course are quite inexpensive. As the addage goes ‘you get what you pay for” well this principal also applies to these types of systems. It is possible to pick up the smallest system for around a 100.00 however a system at this price range may well fall short of your expectations in regards to desired quality and performance.

This type of system is ideal only for an apartmemnt in which you only want to protect your basic belongings such as tv ,vcr etc. but for more valuable items or if you have any children then you would possibly want to opt for a more expensive home security system.

Perimeter security systems are probably the most inexpensive when talking about security system costs. What makes them so effective is that they are designed to sound an alarm when someone tries to cross your grounds before he can enter inside your home.

You can get a decent system for around a couple of hundred dollars. A perimeter alarm will come equipped with window and door sensors, and even motion detectors, some even come with security cameras although these might be a little more expensive. Security system costs will increase with the degree of sophistication of a particular home alarm. For example you may purchase a system with keypad, sensors and motion detector for around $250.

The most expensive types of alarms are the monitored systems. An average one will cost around a $1000.00 plus monthly monitoring fees ranging from $20.00-$30.00 per month. You will usually have to sign a contract for a mimimum period of time ranging from 2 to 5 years depending on the company you are with.

As expensive as it may sound this would be your best option if you had a stand alone house. The monitoring service is an important integral function because it can alert the police or fire dept depending on what type of alarm went off. This can potentially avert a dissaster if you happen to be away at the time. Also having a good alarm system by a reputable company can help decrease your home insurance premiums. Depending on the cost and the level of your current security system, some insurance companies can give you up to a 10% discount on your premiums, so installing a good alarm system is definitley a very smart investment for many reasons.

Any alarm system is more effective if it is obvious that there is one installed in the home in the first place. It is always a good idea to make it obvious that you have a system by putting up signs in your window or even a yardstick with your alarm companies logo. This is a great deterent for possible burglars, as they will more likely stake out a home in which presents the least obstacles for them.
