You would be surprised as to how many people on average do not take into consideration the most basic of security measures for their home. This of course leaves them open to the possibility of having their homes robbed. If you follow some of these basic measures, you will decrease the risk of having your home broken into.

Step 1.

Join your local neighbor hood watch program. This is a very effective measure in preventing thieves from casing your home. All you have to do is contact the local police dept. and they will be able to inform you on how to join. Once a member of your local watch program, you will be supplied with a sign that you can put in your window to alert thieves that there is someone on the lookout for them.

Step 2.

It is quite obvious to make sure that you lock all doors if stepping out. It makes no difference if you are just leaving to go to the local corner store for a couple of minutes. It can only take a few minutes for someone to break in to your home. It is recommended to install a deadbolt and reinforced frame. Many will invest in heavy wood and steel doors, however if the frame is not reinforced, it is just a matter of someone kicking in your door. The bolts and locks will remain intact, but the frame can easily be broken , thus allowing a thief to easily enter your home.

Step 3.

If you are going on vacation , alert your neighbors and ask them to pick up your mail and keep a watch over your place while you are away, also never mention on your answering machine that you will be away for any period of time. It is very important to leave the illusion that there is somebody home at all times. Also, a ‘time sensor’ or ‘light sensor’ lamps are a great asset to have since these devices will automatically illuminate and shut off according to timer programming or outside light.

Step 4.

Something alot of people forget to consider, is to not keep tools in the shed or garage while away. Many burglaries have been done using the tools that were left in these places to aid in the breaking in of someone’s home.

Step 5. Make sure to trim all shrubs and hedges that might obscure your windows or doors or that might conceal  a person on your property. Take a look from the street and see if there are any places near  a window or door that might be able to conceal someone. Make sure to to keep basement windows well in view and not hidden by plants or bushes. basement windows are a favorite entry point for burglars.

Step 6. If you have glass  patio doors, then you may want to take extra security measures by installing special patio door bars, to prevent  a burglar from lifting the patio doors off its tracks. This is a very common method that burglars will use to break in your home. you may also want to put screws in the upper parts of the door tracks to prevent the doors from being rotated that may cause the locks to break.

These are just a few tips to consider when looking for ways to secure your home and protect your family from unwanted intruders. However these methods are best used in conjunction with a good home security system. It is advisable to have duplicates for your keys whether it Is for your car or house windows and doors. This is to avoid hassles in future if you accidentally forget or lost your keys. A couple of duplicate would do but make sure you will keep it to a place that no one knows about it.
