Home Alarms and Security Systems Guide

Nowadays there are many people who live alone that opt  to have personal alarm systems installed in ther dwellings. These systems are easy to use and can be a life saver for those who are in need of assistance should an emergency occur.

There is a large range of personal alarms systems to choose from, starting form simple pull chord types of systems that will activate a flashing beacon, or alarm outside the home, to an autodialer which will dial through the telephone system to a 24 hour monitoring station.

It is important to choose a system that is easy for you to use, that you don’t have a problem with activating the switch. It is also important to ensure that the person you are contacting has easy access to your home if you cannot answer the door. These are just a few considerations when thinking about purchasing a good personal alarm system.

Since alarms are general considered basic security and daily living equipment, they may be provided by an occupational therapist at your local social services dept. These municipal services may vary according to your region. There are also local housing authorities that may be of assistance in providing an assesment of your needs and offer you advice on the most suitable personal alarms system for you.

You may decide to buy an alarm system privately, if so, it is definitely advisable to compare all the different types of systems available before making a purchase.

People who need to summon help from a care giver or neighbor can use a personal alarm system, sometimes also known as an anti-mugging device. These types of alarms can be used by eldery or disabled persons who need to attract the attention of passerbys within earshot if in an emergency.

There are basically 2 types of systems available: battery powered alarms that emit a loud noise when the trigger is pulled; and gas alarms that implement a pressurized container similar to an aerosol can. The alarm is sounded when the cap at the top is pressed. It is important to ensure
that you can easily operate the system and that any passerbys can hear the alarm when sounded.  Having said this, it is always a good idea to be in public places and avoid secluded areas such  dark alleys etc. when traveling alone. Personal alarms systems are available at many local stores and mail order companies.

Pros and cons:

Pros: they are inexpensive and portable. Cons:  they are limited to attracting attention of people only within earshot. The batteries need to be constantly checked to ensure proper functioning.

Fixed position alarms with transmitter and receiver.

These are alarms systems that have a fixed receiver in an accessible area such as the front of the house and or with a neighbor. These are activated from transmitters , such as pull chords or push buttons either inside or outside the persons home. Some systems allow for multiple transmitters placed at various locations in the house and once activated can release the door lock to allow help to enter the house.

Pros: easy to use and install, Cons: User must be within reaching distance to the alarms activation switch.

Hopefully this little article on personal alarms systems may be of some help for those considering  purchasing one for themselves or for  a loved one.
