| Beware of ADT Home Alarm System Scams
Nowadays, not only do consumers and home owners have to beware of thieves and burglars, but there is another potential threat looming in the home alarm system industry as well. There are companies that move from state to state posing as ADT agents. What they do is go door to door of homes that have an ADT security sign in their yard, and they try to get existing customers to upgrade and or purchase unnecessary alarm system components and systems.
The perpetrators will pose as ADT agents and even posses fake ADT identification badges to con their way into unsuspecting ADT customers homes. These con artists will use aggressive scare tactics to try to get consumers to purchase these so called upgrades. The ploy is very effective since most homeowners will not hesitate to let strangers in ADT uniforms into their homes.
One common and effective tactic they use is to tell customers that there has been some sort of malfunction or a problem with their system that requires attention. Then they will try to con the home owner into purchasing equipment at exorbitant prices. In some cases the “agents” will offer the client a free alarm system upgrade that comes attached with a contract that bounds the customer to a long term agreement charging exorbitant rates.
The legal issue with contracts is that even though the consumer has been misled, they are still responsible for their actions, and therefore it can be a very difficult and costly proposition to have a contract legally terminated.
This home alarms system scam is spreading throughout the US which has triggered a federal investigation into these series of crimes. This situation is not only targeted to ADT customers, but many other reputable home alarm system companies as well.
Customer should also beware of telemarketing campaigns that claim the homeowner has won a free alarm system. There is no such thing as a free lunch. these scams also require the customer to sign up for very long term monitoring contracts that offer sub par service and inferior alarm system equipment that often malfunctions or breaks down.
If you are an ADT alarm system owner, then you should know they ADT will never send someone to your house to tell you you need to upgrade or purchase any other equipment. They are a very reputable company that holds customer loyalty as a number one priority. |
