Be Careful of Free Alarms Systems Offers
There are a large variety of home alarms systems companies that offer competitive deals to lure customers to purchase their systems. Many of these companies are reputable businesses that have been around for many years and have earned the trust and credibility of consumers.
With today’s terrible economy its no surprise that money is tight, however the demand for home security is at an all time high. It is understandable to try to find the best deal possible for your home and budget, however you must be careful of offers that sound too good to be true.
Nowadays many less known home alarms systems companies are running telemarketing campaigns informing non suspecting consumers that they have ‘won’ an alarm system.
The scam works like this: A person will recieve a telephone call and will be told that they have just won a brand new home alarms system, and if they accept, a representative will come by their homes to have the “winner’sign an agreement to accept their “prize”.
Of course there is always a catch , however the terms of agreement are designed to fool the recipent by offering a contract that is written in complicated legal jargon that is intended to confuse the consumer.
These types of contracts will have clauses in very fine print that lock the consumer into agreeing to a long term obligation with the alarms company at exorbitant rates. Another thing to watch out for are the “renewal” clauses that will automatically renew a contract after its long term is supposedly over.
Many times unsuspecting home owners who have been waiting for their contract to terminate because they finally realized that they signed a “bad deal” get stuck into another long term contract.
However if you have been a victim of one of these ‘free’ alarms systems scams, there are ways of negating these unethical contracts. In most states and provinces in North America there are consumer protection acts in place to help fight these unscrupulous operators. There are numerous cases where the consumer has sued the unethical alarms company in question and won. In one case, the alarms company had to repay over 20,000. to a victim that fell prey to one of their scams.
Also these ‘free’ home security systems are usually comprised of the most basic of set ups that are low in quality and far from adequate for protecting your home. They are usually battery powered wireless alarm systems that consist of 1 motion detector,1 window and 1 door sensor. This may be suited for a small apartment but hardly a system worth its salt for a stand alone home of any size.
In the end , we have heard the old adage that “if something sounds to good to be true , then it usually is”
So if you ever receive a telephone call or get a letter in the mail informing you that you have just won an alarms system, just refuse or ignore the offer.
If you are really in the market to purchase a home alarms system, then there are many reputable companies out there that will offer you a system of quality and for a competitive price.
