Affordable Home Security Systems

A couple of years back we were in the process of building our new home and we had to make the decision of wether or not to have an alarm system installed while the house was still under construction.

It would have certainly been possible to have a home security system installed afterwards but it is definitely easier to have a wired alarm system put in place when the walls were still being constructed. The reason  for our reluctance to install a home security system is that in my
opinion, most affordable home security systems are relativley easy to defeat. In many cases it is just a matter of a burglar cutting the phone wires and the system is rendered useless. The other reason is that we just didn’t want to pay for a monthly monitoring fee.

However, over time as more and more houses were being built around us, we noticed most new home owners were having home alarms systems installed and putting up alarm company signs in their front yards. In less than a year , ours was one of the few properties that did not have a home monitoring sign, which made us stand out in a way that could possibly make us a prime target for a burglary.

So it was a question of what to do about it. Was it time to install a proper home alarm system and join our nieghbors in that regard, or maybe shop around for a more affordable home security system, such as a do it your self wire alarm system that would not cost too much ?

The avreage professionally installed monitored alarm system would have put us back approximatley $ 1000.00 not to mention the monitoring costs and the long term contracts most alarm companies make you sign. The longer the term you sign for the greater discount you get apparently. Well after shopping around and weighing all the possibilities and options we still were not sure what was the best option for us.

Then I had the idea to see if I could find a alarms company sign and just put that up in my yard instead of springing a large amount of money on a home security system.

I decided to try my luck on Ebay, and sure enough , there was no shortage of ADT signs and other alarm company yard signs up for auction.  I ended up purchasing an ADT yard sign with a handful of window and door stickers for about 20.00. This has saved us a substantial amount of money over the past couple of years and we have had no misfortune of having our home broken into.

I truly believe that the appearance of having a home alarm system is as equally effective of actually owning one. We have had the same results as those who have paid literally hundreds of dollars per year for monitoring for next to nothing.

I am not saying that a home alarm system is not worth the expense, because if there is a break in attempt in your home then you would have certainly been glad that you had a system in place.

The only thing I regret about not having an monitored alarm system in my home is the fire alarm protecion that is offered with most systems these days. If a fire does break out when we are away the only thing to protect our home is a smoke detector that will merely sound a siren in the house. With a monitored alarm in place, the system can dial out to the fire department and alert the proper authorities that can help in preventing a disaster
